چکیده

This paper considers the implementation of semiparametric methods in the empirical analysis of consumer demand. The application is to the estimation of the Engel curve relationship and uses the British Family Expenditure Survey. Household composition is modelled using an extended partially linear framework. This is shown to provide a useful method for pooling non-parametric Engel curves across households of di€erent demographic composition. # 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A consistent semiparametric estimation of the consumer surplus distribution

In this paper, we examine the consequences of demand-function heterogeneity for the estimation of the consumer surplus. In particular, we show that, given a linear demand function with random coefficients, one can consistently estimate the consumer surplus distribution without making parametric assumptions about the coefficient distribution. The approach is illustrated using data on gasoline co...

Semiparametric Estimation of Consumer Demand Systems in Real Expenditure

Microdata concerning consumer demand typically show considerable variation in real expenditures, but very little variation in prices. We propose a semiparametric strategy for the consumer demand problem in which expenditure share equations are estimated Pendakur gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada through its standard re...

Best nonparametric bounds on demand responses

This paper uses revealed preference inequalities to provide the tightest possible (best) nonparametric bounds on predicted consumer responses to price changes using consumer-level data over a finite set of relative price changes. These responses are allowed to vary nonparametrically across the income distribution. This is achieved by combining the theory of revealed preference with the semipara...

Measuring Consumer Behavior: Semiparametric Estimation and Revealed Preference∗

There are three key objectives of these lectures: First, to provide a powerful test of integrability conditions on individual household data without the need for parametric models of consumer behavior. Second, to provide tight bounds on welfare costs of relative price and tax changes. Third, to provide tight bounds on demand responses. The aim is to allow price response parameters to vary acros...
